RAVEL'S BOLERO

SAT 8 APR 2017 8:30PM
SUN 9 APR 2017 3:00PM

Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra
Naohisa Furusawa, conductor
Andrea Oliva, flute
Hristo Dobrinov, flute

STRAVINSKY              Pulcinella Suite
IBERT                         Flute Concerto
QUANTZ                     Concerto for Two Flutes
RAVEL                        Bolero

Technical fluency and lyrical expressiveness are much in evidence as Andrea Oliva (Principal Flute of Rome’s Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia) and Hristo Dobrinov (MPO principal flute) take centrestage. We hear the witty, sprightly concerto by Ibert and a concerto for two flutes by Johann Quantz. To close the concert, the flute once again comes to the fore to open Ravel’s Bolero, a miniature concerto for full orchestra.

RAVEL                      Mother Goose Suite
TCHAIKOVSKY         Violin Concerto
STRAVINSKY            Petrushka (1911)

English conductor Mark Wigglesworth and Serbian violinist Nemanja Radulović join forces in Tchaikovsky’s super-popular Violin Concerto, music that is by turns hyperemotional and passionate, reflective and introspective, hence in many ways reflecting the life of the man who wrote it. Stravinsky’s Petrushka, another audience favourite, is a wildly colourful ballet score filled with picturesque details – some riotously flamboyant, some exquisitely beautiful – depicting a puppet show at a carnival scene in a 19th century Russian village. Fairytale music by Ravel opens the programme.
